The Power of the Gayatri Mantra

Aum Bhuh Bhuvah Svah Tat Savitur Varenyam Bhargo Devasya Dheemahi Dhiyo Yo nah Prachodayat~ The Rig Veda (10:16:3)

This is one of my favourite mantras and if you've ever been to India you've probably heard it chanted all over the place. It is supposed to be one of the oldest and most powerful of mantras so it's known as a Maha Mantra. It translates to something along the lines of 'may all darkness be removed so we become enlightened' although the words are not as important in the Sanskrit language as the effect the vibrations of the words have on our body and energy centres. For someone like me, I find that fascinating!

Whenever I have repeated this mantra over and over (japa) it does have an incredible effect. There is something very soothing about it and uplifting. I remember being in Goa on a retreat and we repeated it 108 times during our morning sadhana, it was incredible, you kind of fall into a trance repeating it and there's a lovely meditative effect on the body and mind.

Here's a few of the benefits I've found listed on other websites:-

  1. Removes obstacles from your life
  2. Protects you from danger
  3. Brightens you mind
  4. Dispels ignorance
  5. Improves communication abilities
  6. Opens your psychic vision
  7. Brings direct knowledge of the eternal truths

IMG_4677The Vedas say:

To chant the Gayatri Mantra  purifies the chanter. To listen to the Gayatri Mantra  purifies the listener.

But the mantra does more, as I found out. It opens up your heart. And how well we know, when both our minds and our hearts open, we open ourselves up for new possibilities.

Thank you to for this last paragraph.
